1. Aging Foot

●   Bunions:

A bunion is a bony bump formed at the base of the big toe. It occurs when adjacent toes push against the bug toe, causing the joint to protrude and enlarge. Common causes of bunions are wearing tight or narrow shoes, genetic predisposition, and certain foot deformities.

●   Clawing of toes:

In this deformity, toes bend into a claw-like shape, with the joint at the base of the toe pointing up and the rest bending downward. Muscle imbalances, ill-fitting shoes, nerve damage, and conditions like arthritis can cause claw toes.

● Choosing suitable, comfortable footwear, such as running shoes, to support body weight

 

2. Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot, a fungal infection, presents with symptoms like cracked, blistered, or peeling skin, waterlogged areas, and flakiness around the heels. Causes include contact with fungal agents in moist environments or through person-to-person contact, making those prone to excessive sweating more susceptible. 

Causes

● Walking barefoot in moist or barren areas:

Walking barefoot in environments with high moisture levels, such as public showers, swimming pools, or changing rooms, increases the risk of coming into contact with the fungus responsible for the athlete's foot (usually dermatophytes). This is because moist areas create an ideal breeding ground for fungi. When the feet come in contact with contaminated surfaces, the fungus can easily penetrate the skin.

● Contact with fungal agents:

Direct contact with surfaces or objects carrying fungal agents, especially in environments where these organisms thrive, can facilitate the transmission of the fungus to the feet. Fungal agents responsible for athlete's foot are contagious. Contact with contaminated surfaces, such as towels, shoes, or floors in public spaces, can introduce the fungus to the skin.

● Excessive sweating:

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, creates a warm and damp environment within the shoes, providing an optimal setting for fungal growth. Since fungi thrive and proliferate in warm, moist conditions, excessive sweating can soften the skin and make it more susceptible to fungal invasion.

Treatments

● Use of  antifungal powders, sprays, or creams

● Maintaining hygienic conditions with regular washing and drying of feet

● Choosing breathable footwear and changing socks frequently

 

3. Blisters

Blisters are painful fluid-filled lesions caused by friction, ill-fitting shoes, or excessive moisture. They require your attention to maintain foot health. 

Causes

● Ill-fitting shoes:

Shoes that do not fit properly, either being too tight or too loose, can cause friction between the shoe and the skin. This friction is a common precursor to blister formation.

● Excessive moisture:

Excessive moisture on the skin, often due to factors like sweating or walking in wet conditions, softens the skin and makes it more susceptible to friction-related conditions like blisters.

● Wrinkled socks:

Wrinkled socks contribute to increased friction between the sock and the skin, particularly in areas where the fabric is folded. This friction can result in blister formation.

● Hygienic and moisture-free conditions

● Wearing properly fitting shoes that provide adequate toe room

● Changing socks daily

● Opting for comfortable footwear with proper aeration
